Section 189 — Racing and trails of speed
Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 (Act 59 of 1988)
Text of the section
Racing and trails of speed.—Whoever without the written consent of the State Government permits or takes part in a race or trial of speed of any kind between motor vehicles in any public place shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months, or with fine which may extend to five hundred rupees, or with both.

Amended by the 2019 Amendment Act
In section 189 of the principal Act,— (i) for the words “one month”, the words “three months” shall be substituted; (ii) for the words “which may extend to five hundred rupees”, the words “of five thousand rupees” shall be substituted; (iii) after the words "with both", the words, "and for a subsequent offence shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine of ten thousand rupees; or with both." shall be inserted. 72.
